2003 Community Challenge Weekend

For our 2003 Community Challenge Weekend ("CCW") the Tulsa Chapter supported Anderson Elementary School for the third year running.  Anderson Elementary School, named for famed singer, Marian Anderson, is an at-risk school where more than 30 percent of its students scored below satisfactory levels in reading, English and math last year.

During October, the Tulsa Chapter helped encourage and stimulate education at the school.  On October 3, volunteers (with the support of area law firms) brought the Oklahoma Aquarium's Water on Wheels (W.O.W.) program to the school for a full day of individualized programs.

Ten Chapter members worked in 2-hour shifts throughout the day, assisting at the artifact table and touch tank.  Each child received an Aquatic Pack, consisting of aquatic-themed coloring pages, pencils, erasers and a notepad.  Local television stations provided news coverage of the event.

On October 18, six Chapter members and volunteers finished landscaping the flower bed which began in May with the help of third graders.  The crew also added stepping stones, which were hand-painted by Chapter members earlier in the week.
